i'm not going to lie: the reason i like shutDOWN isn't steve wilson's vocals. it's sean malone's bassline during the latter half of the song. and in addition to portnoy's departure, daniel gildenlöw was originally supposed to partake in the album, but apparently the subject matter and issues addressed drifted from what he was hoping to do and left before recording began.

and i agree, sort of, on isis: celestial is definitely my least favorite of their releases, but at the same time their first EP, which has almost none of the hallmarks of their post-celestial albums, might be my favorite. that EP is the reason there's a debate at all about whether or not post-metal is a real genre or not, or if it's just a continuation of "sludge" (frankly a retarded debate.)

and about your shameless thievery: it certainly wasn't an original idea of mine. i'm sure i jacked it from some other blog i once read. we're all a bunch of damned pirates anyway.

Yeah, specificially, it was that one clusterfuck of a day where the truck didn't show and we ended up there until 6:00 pm. Was actually more fun of a day than any of the freight shifts I did last summer (prolly 'cause that was back when EVERYONE did their jobs), but yeah. That'd be why I 'member it.

I've only briefly listened to Chroma Key and Fates Warning (didn't care for the latter much at all), but to me, a lot of the songs on OSI's debut follow the same prog-metal/acoustic/soft-vocal structure that Porcupine Tree did with IA. New Math, OSI, and shutDOWN come to mind immediately (shutDOWN for obvious reasons, of course). But yeah, I'm sure you could describe OSI just as well comparing them to their old bands, it's just that I think more people are familiar with Porcupine Tree.

Amusingly, Leitmotif is very much associated with me sitting in my truck at 4 am waiting for someone to open the store. Natural Born Chaos is associated with that place for me as well. Despite that, I still enjoy those albums.

I have to say, I don't really get why you compare OSI's self-titled to In Absentia. Seems to me that listing the former bands of the members, while maybe underselling how good they are, gets you a pretty good description (DT + Chroma Key + Fates Warning). Free trades some of the prog-metal influences for more Chroma Key. Maybe that's just me.
